health, emotional well-being and love (of course!)

First up – health

Physical health and emotional health are intertwined. As humans how we eat, how we exercise and how we feel are all connected. Most people know that having a sugar binge will lead to a sugar “high” and then you crash back down shortly afterwards.

cat and sugar crash
pretty much me in a long arvo at work!!

For sustained energy you’re better off having a handful of nuts or a banana (yes there is sugar in fruit, however there’s lots of other nutrients and fiber too!!).

Food can affect our emotions and our emotional well-being too. How many times have you overindulged on the weekend, either a junk food binge or too many wines out with the girls? (mmhmm hand up guilty on this one…) Then come Monday morning you drag yourself awake feeling terrible and promising to eat healthy, drink more water and haul your ass out the door for a walk/run/swim/hit the gym?

But what can I do?

Good question. What can you do? Everyone talks about “everything in moderation” and for sure that cliche has some merit. However, what does moderation actually mean? And how do you ensure you are being “moderate” in what you choose to consume? Here’s one simple tip:

Keep a food diary – it really does help keep track of everything you eat and drink on a daily basis (including that one, sorry two or was that three glasses of wine each night?) try it for a couple of weeks and you’ll surprise yourself for sure!!

image of a food diary/journal
food diary

Then you can use your food diary outcomes to change up what you eat and how you eat and you can easily spot things that you can swap out or cut down. For example, if you find you have a choc bar every arvo, swap it out a couple times/week for a small handful of nuts or piece of fresh fruit. If every morning you have a super large full-cream vanilla coffee latte – swap it out for low-fat coffee a couple of times/week. Glass or 3 of wine each night? Aim to have a couple of wine-free nights, swap it out for mineral water with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. Making small changes makes you feel less deprived and more likely to stick with them and maybe even increase the changes over time! And remember:

create the change you want to be!

Love and Emotional Health (for me)

ok, this one is surprisingly tricky. It’s all very well for me to say that you need love in your life to improve your emotional well-being. It’s a loaded concept and far too easy to criticise. Many of us have been or are alone without a significant other in our lives – so it’s always painful to hear that love is important and necessary to stay emotionally healthy, but it kinda is…

But you know and I know that love is not just from the husband/wife/partner in our life. It’s also our family, friends, child(ren), pets  whether that’s a dog, cat, goldfish, goanna (an Aussie lizard, go google it, I’ll wait…).

Animals and small children give us unconditional love and that’s the kind that makes us feel wonderful and that all is right with the world even when it really is not. My daughter is just as loving and adorable at 26 as she was as a tiny child, I look at her and am amazed at how awesome she is and how lucky I am. So, go hug your child/children or your fur-baby, whichever, whatever – it’s all good.

I also have my therapy dog George and I share his love with the students and staff at work, with dementia patients and with random strangers I meet out walking him (love and exercise – mmhmm, I’m in heaven!!) Here’s a pic of George for y’all to make you smile.

Get on over to his fb page Georgie-boy on fb for more joy and happy, then come back here for my final comments on love.

Love – that is all

don’t let go!!

So, now for my final comments on this blog post. Y’all know I’ve been in a relationship that has had some serious stops and starts and it’s caused me a fair amount of anguish and my living it all out in social media means everyone pretty much knows my business, so I have no secrets – not sure if that’s a good thing, but that is how it is for me.

Yes, we are back together. Yes, I know some of my friends worry about this. Yes, I know what I am doing. Yes, I know how the story may end (hey I’ve been living it for the last year!) and No, you don’t have the right to tell me how I should live my life. I love my friends, but you cannot make my decisions for me. You can choose to question my decisions, but I’d truly appreciate you keeping that to yourself and having respect for my choice, even if you think it is not the right one.

And me? I always choose love and you know what? That is my happy. He asked me if I had put this photo on fb and I’m like nah, but it’s killing me and he laughed coz he knows I put it all out there – so here, this is us…

FITNESS TIPS

A lot of people tell me that running is not good for you, either at all or when you are an older runner (aka me!!). And you know what? That is not true. Most recent research shows that you can continue running right into your twilight years and in fact, it’s possible to take up running in your 40s, 50s or 60s – even for those who consider themselves “non-runners”*

WHO HAS TIME TO EXERCISE? WE DO!!

Last Sunday I was out playing Supa Golf with a bunch of friends, it was hella good fun and a little bit of incidental exercise walking around the 9 hole course. The game is played with big colourful golf balls and a selection of four clubs – including my favorite “big boy” and I am surprisingly ok at the game.

Afterwards we had lunch and I got to talking with this guy I’d not met before and he started talking about running and that he managed to run a couple of times per week (which is actually really good compared to most folk). But then he said the usual “..I don’t have time to run/exercise more than that…” and so I called him on it. You know, we all have the same 24 hours in each and every day and we all choose what we do with those hours, so to say you don’t have time to exercise then I will call you on that! Unless you work 12 hour shifts, have a bunch of young children or health/injury issues to contend with, then you DO have time to exercise!!

WRITING & CATS…

On Saturday I spent the day at a Master’s class on writing – just looking for some tips on being consistent, time management (hey I have a busy life too!!) and tools for increasing/improving my writing for this blog and my e-Book on health and fitness that I’m working on.

Dev promoting my business 🙂

and she signed her book for me 🙂 😛 🙂 love, love, love!!

And a shout out to Catherine who ran the class who gave us some really cool tips that I’ve already put in place in terms of productivity enhancement. Sometimes in a super busy life you can only “write in the cracks” so when you have those “cracks” in time then you need to make the most of them. So if you want some tools to help you manage your day/productivity (and find that elusive time to exercise!!) then check out some of these tools:

Use an internet blocker so that you don’t get distracted by Facebook; cat videos; emails; more cat videos – a good one is Freedom

My cat Bloss doing her thing!! 🙂 🙂

Use a time management tool – Pomodoro is excellent and can be used with just a timer and a couple of useful tips from the Pomodoro website or a time management app, there are some good ones for IOS and for Android.

LURVE LIFE – because it’s almost Valentine’s Day and you know, romance!!

Now where would we be without an update on all things love?!? Ok… following on from my last post, yes I am seeing someone and yes it is good (so far, there’s always a so far involved in my love life) and he has got me dancing – well taking dancing lessons!! For those who have read my earlier blog posts, you’d know that dancing and I are not usually best buddies. But strangely and to my own eternal surprise I am doing quite well, I am remembering the steps (mostly), have not stomped on anyone’s toes (yet) and I haven’t fallen over my own feet!! And I can practice with my boyfriend/lover/man-person and practising really helps. Another cool surprise is that I usually feel quite happy after a dance class, must be those endorphins – the same ones you get after other forms of exercise!!

endorphins
gotta love those endorphins!!!

*(please note, when beginning any new exercise regimen, always check with your GP or health care provider first)

ok so this – I’m gonna be a health coach (hopefully)

Health Coaching

I’ve decided to start-up a part-time health coaching business. I often give advice to friends and family on their health and fitness goals and I love helping people reach their goals or motivate them to get healthier.

I’m going to name my business after my blog HealthyWildand50plus and I’m setting up a Facebook page to promote it as well – the page is still new and I’d love your feedback, here’s the link – healthywildand50plus on fb

I’ve had to do all the legal things that are required here in Australia to start a small business, including getting an Australian Business Number (ABN) and registering my business name with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). Need to make sure I have everything legal and above-board before dipping my toe into the small business world!

Inspire you, motivate you, coach you

I’m aiming to offer an introductory consultation, either face-to-face or via Skype and then folk can either leave it there or if they want to hire me as their health coach I will offer a number of options and ask them to commit to three or six months. Health and fitness change does not happen overnight and I am hoping to work with people who are committed to positive change in their lives, but who need guidance, ideas, motivation and support to get and keep going!!

Donna

I’m coaching my niece Donna at the moment… giving her encouragement, motivation and a fair dose of nagging to keep her moving every day. Messaged her yesterday asking how’s it going and she’s like “yeah, nah, lazy, lazy” So I messaged straight back with “your treadmill loves you, it misses you, get back on it!” 10 minutes later she sent a pic of her running on her treadie – with her tongue hanging out! Cheeky but funny! I’d put the pic of her on it here, but she’d probs not really appreciate that!! So here’s another pic for your entertainment.

Nothing more to say really!! 🙂

I’m also working with her on her eating and dietary habits, how to shop clean and healthy, ideas for cooking healthy meals and she’s for sure going with it – she’s now sending me pics of the meals she’s putting together!!

Exercise

Can’t be a post without an update on exercise. This is a pic of my morning run at Lake Monger in Western Australia – beautiful location, pretty scenery, lots of wildlife and loads more runners/walkers/dog exercisers than on my usual run.

This morning I had a running buddy, which is always nice. I do love running alone, but it’s kinda special having someone to run with – especially if it’s someone important in your life. He doesn’t usually run, so it’s pretty cool that he came running with me, like willingly – there was no coercion, seriously none at all!! >.>

Love Life update – well sort of, maybe, not really – but you know, life = complicated, messy and generally confusing if you ask me!!

Well things are for sure happening here in my love life – but for now I’m being all coy on y’all and will only say “watch this space”

It’s the New Year! Time to get healthy y’all

Health and Illness

It’s been a while since my last post and here we are one week into 2017!! How is that even possible? It’s been a roller coaster ride in life for me since I last talked with y’all. Being all super healthy and fit I found it really challenging coz I kept getting sick last winter (June/July/Aug over here in Oz).

I hardly ever get sick and I am nowhere near stoic or able to deal… I am more the whiny, miserable sort. Which was pretty pointless as there’s only really George to listen to me moan and complain – mind you, he is a pretty awesome listener and he’d just snuggle up with me when I couldn’t even get my head off the pillow.

Lurve Update y’all…

Sad to say my relationship went belly up last year too and not just once – it turned into that horrible relationship game that some folk play – pull me/push me! He’d get real close and I’d be all like “naaaw… this is so lovely – he loooves me!!” then Bam! He’d end it without warning and I was left reeling. And like I just said, not just the once!

D’oh, you’d think I’d learn the first time – you know the saying “once bitten – run the hell away and don’t look back” well that’s not exactly the right saying, but it sure as hell should be!!

broken heart
ouch – so much ouch!!

So what’s next?

But hey!! I gotta keep moving, running, hiking, swimming, working (gotta earn George’s dog bix), loving – yeah that too, I am truly the eternal optimist! I’m back to dating, no-one special yet, but I’ll keep y’all posted on that later on (going on a date this afternoon – so hey, maybe, possibly and if nothing else a coffee and conversation with a nice guy).. umm back from that one and uhh, hmmm – nope!

Running, just keep running

Still running and loving it and my running buddy Kerry and I did our first stint as Event Traffic Controllers this summer for our running club and had fun keeping the runners from getting squished by impatient, jerky drivers who just have to drive right through a running event – ha!! Not on our watch buddy!

Running, PokemonGo, more running…and just a touch of dating!!

Favorite people and Pokemon!

I just read a blog post by one of my favorite bloggers, Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess and found she is playing PokemonGo and so am I (along with a gazillion other people around the world!!)… here’s a link to Jenny’s blog just in case you’d like to read more… and she is absolutely correct – this game does help with anxiety 🙂

…and I totally get her comment on the rats… why on earth are there so many Rattatas wandering about? Here’s one sneaking up on George my therapy dog

…wha? is there something behind me?

…on being sick 😦

Now, back to staying fit and healthy… well that’s a bit easier now. It’s winter over here in Australia and of course I’ve had all my work colleagues sneezing, snuffling and coughing up a lung all around me. And one by one, we have all succumbed to the dreaded bug/virus/plague from hell!!

I’ve managed to catch it twice in a month, both times I had to take time off work because I was so sick. Seriously, wtf is it with colds these days? I’m sure back in the day you had a runny nose, sore throat, bit of a cough and then you’d be right as rain within 7 days. Now it seems the cold has mutated into an evil demon that causes all of the above, plus fevers, crashing headaches, doing weird things to your voice – well, more like losing your voice and squeaking like a demented mouse!! and keeping you out of action for weeks.

Running, because, running…

Anyway, I’m all better now, thank you for asking 🙂 and back to running. I ran in the Swan River Run on Sunday and managed a really good time. I’m so glad I’m back to being fighting fit… more pics on the run soon… for now, here’s a pic of one of my morning running routes – it’s so pretty!!

Love and romance

…and on a final note – I haven’t updated y’all on my relationship lately, suffice to say it’s had a few ups and downs, which is normal (although it never feels that way when you are going through it, does it?)… this morning Nick sent through a text of a saying he’d found: “we come by love, not by finding the perfect person, but learning to love the imperfect perfectly” …and you know what? I think that is just perfect!! 🙂

Running Inspiration…

I know it’s hard to find the time and the energy to exercise on a regular basis. I always get asked how I find the motivation to run most mornings (especially now that it’s winter in my part of the world and cold and dark in the mornings!!) and like I’ve said before motivation is only a small part of the equation.

Motivation might get you up and running, swimming, dancing or off to that spin or yoga class, but it’s habit (and a goodly dose of bloody mindedness!!) that keeps you going for the long term!

And maybe you could set a goat (wtf keyboard? goat? Really??) goal, set a goal!! Some people work well setting a personal goal like getting in shape for a special occasion (wedding, birthday, holiday) and some work better setting an external goal. Get fitter to chase the kids around or enter a fun run and fundraise for a charitable cause.

IMAG0655
Luna gave me lots of puppy kisses after the race!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

My latest run was the 12kms in the HBF Run for a Reason. A big part of the event is raising much needed funds and this year I run in support of Guide Dogs WA’s ‪#‎Jog4ADog team to sponsor a new Guide Dog (each puppy costs more than $35,000 to train!) in memory of a friend’s guide dog who died recently.

Every step of the way (especially the last few kms….) I was thinking of the puppies and as a reward the Guide Dogs Association had guide dogs to welcome us at the finish line 🙂

…and to finish up here’s a pic of George the Therapy Dog in full running mode – he couldn’t enter the race with me because it was a human only race, but he surely was my inspiration in my training runs leading up to the day!! Check out George’s facebook page here for more pics and stories about his adventures as a therapy dog!!

…dating fun & mishaps!!

If you’ve read my earlier posts y’all would know that I’ve been single for a while – but I’m happy to let you know that I’ve met someone!! Yay!!

Yep, that’s right, there’s a new man in my life and we shall call him Nick (mostly because that is his actual name 😛 ). He’s gorgeous, smart, funny and genuinely nice (and I mean nice in the best sense of the word). All of which I equally really like about him … Right, so where was I? Yep, new guy, dating, all good. Oh and I’m pretty sure he likes me too, that’s important in this whole dating thing. cute couple holding hands Much kissing, holding hands, going out and doing stuff like tea drinking, food eating, dancing (not my strong suit at all!) and 10 pin bowling!!! (I equally suck at bowling – more on that in another post)… Nick loves dancing – me not so much. Except, you know, champagne – loud music then dancing stuff happens!!

We’ve been out dancing twice so far, but not the serious proper stuff (which is something Nick is also actually good at, whereas I am more your uncoordinated, fall over your own feet type of dancer). And as y’all know, I’m a runner not a dancer. I may be graceful* on the running track, but not so much on the dance floor…

running; racing
…at my sweaty best!!

(*if by graceful, you mean sweaty, red in the face and panting – then I’ve got that nailed!!)

…but s’ok, I managed to channel my inner Elaine from Seinfeld, so i pretty much smashed it – I am aiming to impress! 😛
